Another School record falls, five make it to the Palace

Posted Monday, February 22, 2010 by Dan Alger
The day started out excellent for the fearsome five, a group of five seniors, all members of the “100 WIN CLUB”, all advancing to the state finals. Nick Russler lead the day off with a pin at the 5:50 mark over his first round opponent from Mt. Clemens. Caleb Alger followed it up with a pin in 1:47 of his opponent from Livonia Clarenceville. Charles Loveland was up next and got a pin at 4:56 on his opponent from Clawson. Chris Bachus didn’t waste much time with a 50 second pin. That led to Aaron Anuszkiewicz turn to see if he could make it five pins in the first round. Aaron was unable to pin his guy before he had racked up enough points at 3:12 of the match to earn a technical fall at 17-2.

The semifinals had Nick win a 17-3 decision against Brian Davis from Summitt Academy. Then saw a rematch of the district semifinals of Caleb vs. District Champ and #5 ranked Kenny Zimmerman from Portland. Caleb had an exciting bout and escaped with a decisive 7-3 victory. Charles was faced against #4 ranked 56-0 Zach Corcoran. Charles lost a hard fought 5-2 decision and sent him to the blood round. Chris then faced #3 ranked Cody Ott from Ida. It was a hard fought battle as Chris got by with a 5-4 victory. Aaron then faced for the third time in a week Chris Wellman from Durand. This time Aaron came away with a major decision 14-4.

Four of the five had punched their ticket to the Palace. The pressure  was on to make it five for five. With Charles facing elimination and battling an opponent that he had achieved three one point victories throughout the season, Joey Hodges of Stockbridge. This was a nail biter of a match. At the end of regulation the score was tied 2-2, at the end of the first overtime the score remained 2-2. The first of two 30 second periods began with Charles deferring the choice. Hodges chose down. Charles was able to keep him down until the very last seconds of the round. From the view of the stands it appeared that Hodges jumped the very last whistle and was able to gain an escape. Now it came time for Charles to go down and see if Hodges could keep him down. With five seconds left Charles got an escape and then a quick takedown for the victory.

In the Championship final matches, Nick won a 12-5 decision over #9 ranked Jeff Tyburski of Grosse Ile. Caleb was pinned at the 4:57 mark by #6 ranked Gage Aebersold of Onsted . Chris lost his shot of Regional Chamionship to #2 ranked 40-1 Aaron Risch form Williamston. Aaron saw a rematch of the district finals against #10 Justin Johnson of Williamston. Aaron defeated him again, this time with a 6-2 decsion. In the consolation finals Charles was defeated by Jesse Braximaier of Hillsdale 6-1.

Nick and Aaron are Regional Champions, Caleb and Chris take second place and Charles took fourth, as all five will head to the Palace for the State finals on Thursday March 4th through Saturday March 6th. This breaks another school record of sending the most wrestlers to the state finals. Good Luck BOYS!!!!!!!! Make them remember the TITANS!!!!!
